This rich and tasty Herring/Lox combination is inspired by Rav Yisrael Friedman of Rizhin (1796 - 1850). A great grandson of the Maggid of Mezeritch, his holy lineage was traced all the way back to King David. Taking the reigns of his father’s Chassidus at the age of 16, he became the Rebbe of his birthplace, Prohobisht. Shortly after, he moved his Chassidic Court to Rizhin and built the fledgling Jewish community into a center of Chassidic philosophy while attracting many followers and growing in fame. Unlike other Rebbes, he wouldn’t teach Torah publicly, preferring instead to teach Torah principles through stories and witticisms. The Rizhiner’s Chassidic court was also renowned for luxury; he lived in a regally-furnished mansion and traveled in a silver carriage drawn by four white horses. Yet this display of wealth was for a Holy purpose. Rav Yisrael’s mission was to discover holiness in even the most mundane objects and locales while simultaneously attempting to raise the standard of living for Jews in Europe. This opulence surely attracted wealthy Jews from all over yet even the poorest people felt comfortable in his presence. It is told that even his most expensive boots had no soles. Therefore the Rebbe would walk virtually barefoot even in the cold snow - perhaps reminding himself that the grandeur is all for the sake of Heaven. Rav Yisrael’s unique ability to incorporate many different “flavors” and accept everyone into his Chassidic Court is the inspiration behind this Everything Bagel Spice Herring & Lox.
